The Girard Plague(tm)

Had a little get together for some various college friends this weekend in Hopatcong...   I've done this for the past few years, and everyone seems to enjoy it, especially when the weather is as gorgeous as it was this weekend past.  We just chilled out on the Party Barge, Regency Edition, swam, ate, and drank.  This party is always complicated because the boat really is the limiting factor, as it only seats 14 including the driver.  We were pretty much at capacity this year, which means I might seriously have to look into renting a second boat next year...  Which should make invitations less complicated but increase the planning required.

[info]equalize and [info]rat_girl3 were among the attendees, and they came with a bit of a cold.  Unfortunately, I seem to have picked up that cold, and it is really kicking my ass (but I'm still glad they were able to come to the party)...   I've been out of work for the past two days, but I'm starting to come around...  I'm sure tomorrow I'll be fighting off the congestion, and I probably won't walk to work, but I'm starting to get a little stir-crazy in the house.

The couple buying the condo below us closed today, so it is our first evening with neighbors in two months.  I've gotten so used to having the run of the place, it will take a little getting used to.  They seem cool as hell, though, so I'm not anticipating any troubles...

Strange Week

I've felt out of sorts all week, and I'm not sure why...   I ended up driving to work most of this week, so perhaps that has something to do with it.  I slipped and fell on the way to work on Monday, thanks to some piece of shit who couldn't be bothered to clear their sidewalk...  After I got to work, I hooked up my iPod to the computer and it wasn't seeing the connection.  I thought it got damaged in the fall, but after banging it on the desk a few times and blowing out the dock connector, it finally seemed to work.

Corinna and I continue trying to button up the remainder of the pre-sale house tasks...  Last weekend we moved even more stuff into the storage locker..  We have a few final things to put in there, and I will hopefully get them together this weekend and be able to check that box.  Last night I took [info]coco_b to Home Depot so she could pick out paint for the bedroom and get some other supplies.  I am no fun to shop with, so we have an agreement where I am the chauffeur and then I sit in the car doing whatever..   Last night I spent the time catching up on old issues of Skeptical Inquirer.  I have a stack of about 6 issues that I never even opened, and I'd rather not move them if I don't have to...

Today I walked in...  It's so beautiful outside, it was really invigorating!

This Sunday, the film club is going to a pre-screening of "Hot Fuzz" at the Brattle, and Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright will be there in person...  Should be a good time!

Oh..... Fudge.....

I was pulling into my neighborhood yesterday and heard the dreaded sound of a flat tire. The tire had a slice on it's sidewall on the INSIDE of the tire, which I don't even understand. I pulled off to the side of the road to swap it out, jacked up the car, took off the lugs, and couldn't get the wheel off. I called [info]coco_b, who brought me a hammer and some work gloves. Wacked on the wheel with the hammer, stomped on it with my (lame) legs, and did everything I could to get the fucker off to no avail. I called AAA, who came in record time (10 minutes or so), but they couldn't get it off either, and the tire wouldn't hold air, so they called in a tow truck, which towed my car across the street (about 45 minutes later). So now I am waiting at home for them to call me, they estimated that it would be before noon, but who knows..

The god of headlamps hates me

I have replaced one or both of the headlamps in my car several times (4 or more) in the past 365 days... Yesterday I replaced my passenger side low beam. This morning while the car was warming up, the drivers side low beam blinked out. What the fuck is going on?

Please, don't talk about getting hand oil or residue on the bulb, I'm fully aware of that and quite careful.

Plague-ridden

Last night before bed I noticed the beginnings of a sore throat, so I popped back some Cold-Eeze. Around 5:00am I woke up with a terrible sore throat, and got up to get some water as well as another lozenge. I went back to bed and tossed and turned but couldn't fall back asleep, so around 6am I decided to just get up, shower, and get to work. I got to work at 7:15am, which I believe is a new record for me at Goodrich.

I cancelled my subscription to Audible subscription yesterday... I had the plan where you get 1 audiobook and 1 subscription a month (which I used for Car Talk), but I haven't been listening to the audiobooks during my normal commute, so they've been piling up.. I still love their service, and will eventually buy books piecemeal once I plow through my backlog, but the subscription is a bit too much in this age of podcasts... Not to mention Howard Stern... :)

Yesterday I bought a Sirius Satellite Radio receiver for my car with my Christmas cash.. I hadn't been listening to Howard very reliably during my commute because my commute was just long enough to get two blocks of commercials and one block of content, which was pretty frustrating... I had been eyeing Sirius for a year or two now, but Howard is definitely what pushed me over the edge.. The best part was after I installed it in my car, I turned on Howard 100 and they just so happened to be doing a studio gear test at that moment with most of the crew, so it was like a little preview show. I've heard rumblings that the show will still have commercials, which would disappoint me (and probably cause me to drop my subscription, if they were overbearing), but hopefully they won't be there (or at least won't be bad). I figured the price of the Sirius subscription is less than what I was paying each month for Audible, so it's a bit easier to justify. The other reason, besides Howard, was that without listening to the Radio anymore I was discovering less new music, so hopefully this will rectify that as well.

Ugh

I had a strange question asked of me today... Matt Weaver asked me if I had tried to 'su -' on his machine today... I hadn't, which opened a huge can of worms that ended up with me (and others) believing that my password was somehow obtained and used without my knowledge by persons unknown. This problem was exacerbated by the fact that I was using the same password on many systems. If the person was a good cracker, they would have covered their tracks, so it's difficult to tell how long they've been at this, but if we are to believe logs it seems like it was only today (er, wednesday).

I do my best to choose good passwords, but I guess I had one bad habit left, which was using the same password on multiple systems... I suspect that many of you reading do this, so I don't feel so guilty, but still...

Anyway, I have gone through all the Unix systems I have access to (or, at least the ones I remember) and changed my passwords to something unique to each system. I've also deleted any ssh keys I had floating around as they can't be trusted anymore. At least this way if this happens again, using unique passwords on all the various systems will limit the blast radius. If you're reading, I hope that was fun for you.. (P.S. If I have an account on your machine and I haven't mailed you, let me know because I might have forgotten about you).

In less aggravating news I saw Henry Rollins tonight doing his Spoken Word act... As always, a wonderful show (although the seats sucked).

Anger.

I recently had to make a copy, so I went over to our magic Xerox machine, and in the tray I saw a printout of someone's order confirmation for Verizon FiOS service (Fiber to the Home). This person is not me. This makes me very angry.

yawn

I haven't posted anything in forever.... Well, the past few weeks I have been to NJ, got into a small auto accident, seen DJ Z-Trip, and went to the CSH Welcome Back party... All of which probably merit more details, but I'm feeling sorta lazy...

I spent all morning moving my stuff from one cube to another.... I'm getting comfortable in my new cube, but someone has to mount my whiteboard to the wall....
